How Often Should You Clean a Dryer Vent in West Hollywood?
The standard advice is once a year. That works for some people. For others it is too often. For others it is not enough. The honest answer depends on what your situation actually looks like.
The starting point
For an average household, a vent cleaning every 12 to 18 months is a reasonable baseline. That is what we suggest if you have:
- Two to four people doing normal laundry
- A vent run of typical length (15 to 25 feet)
- No pets that shed heavily
- A building with vents in good condition
From there, factors push the schedule shorter or longer.
What pushes you toward more frequent cleaning
Heavy laundry use
Larger families. People who do laundry every day. Households with kids in sports or jobs that require frequent uniform changes. The more loads, the more lint reaches the vent.
Pets that shed
Pet hair on clothes ends up in the lint trap and the vent. Households with shedding dogs or long-haired cats often need cleaning every 6 to 12 months instead of yearly.
Long vent runs
Many West Hollywood condos and older apartments have long horizontal runs or vertical runs to the roof. The longer the path, the more places for lint to settle. Long runs benefit from cleaning every 9 to 12 months.
Lots of bends
Each elbow or turn slows airflow and gives lint a place to collect. Vents with multiple bends collect lint faster than straight runs.
High-volume rental units
Rental apartments where multiple tenants have used the dryer hard for years often need a deep cleaning, then a regular schedule of yearly maintenance.
Older buildings with original ductwork
Buildings that have not had vents cleaned in a long time, or that still use older flex ducts, often have built-up lint that needs an initial deep cleaning.
What lets you stretch the schedule
- Single-person household with light laundry use
- Short, straight vent run (under 10 feet)
- Newer building with clean ducts and good design
- No pets
- Already had a thorough cleaning recently and use is unchanged
In these cases, every 18 to 24 months can be enough.
Skip the calendar — watch the symptoms
The most reliable signal is not how long ago the last cleaning was. It is how the dryer is performing now. Schedule sooner if you notice:
- Drying time has gotten noticeably longer
- The dryer or laundry area feels hotter than before
- Outside vent airflow is weaker than it used to be
- You see lint collecting behind or around the dryer
- You smell a faint hot lint smell during cycles
A dryer that is performing well does not need cleaning just because the calendar says so. A dryer showing any of the symptoms above needs cleaning regardless of when the last service was.
For property managers
If you manage rental units, a yearly schedule per unit is a good baseline. Higher-turnover buildings or units with documented complaint history may need it twice a year. We have a longer guide on this for property managers.
What about between tenants?
Cleaning the vent during turnover is one of the best times to do it. The unit is empty, access is unlimited, and you reset the system before the new tenant ever uses the dryer. Many landlords build this into their standard turnover checklist.
Frequently asked questions
Do I really need it every year if my dryer seems fine?
Not necessarily. If the dryer is performing well, the outside airflow is strong, and you are not seeing lint behind the dryer, you can probably stretch to 18 to 24 months. A vent that is doing its job does not need to be opened on a strict schedule.
Can I just clean the vent myself with a kit from the hardware store?
DIY kits work for short, straight, accessible vents. They do not reach long runs, complex bends, or rooftop exits. They also do not let you check the outside vent flap or the dryer-to-wall connection thoroughly. For most West Hollywood condos and apartments, DIY is not enough.
